Letters from Artists #02 - Poppy Waddilove

私は昔からずっと都会の雰囲気に惹かれ、それをロマンチックに表現することに心を寄せてきました。昨年、ロンドンのピムリコにある新しい居住兼アトリエに引っ越したとき、ようやく自分がいるべき場所にたどり着いたように感じました。

今のフラットはヴィクトリア様式の建物で、まるでパリを思わせる雰囲気があります。（パリは私が長年愛し、多くのインスピレーションを受けてきた場所です。）手の凝ったモールディング、高いサッシュ窓と天井、そして創作のためのシンプルで小さなスペース。そうしたところに惹かれ、この部屋を選びました。毎日、絵を描きながら窓の外を眺め、美しく並ぶ家々、大きく伸びる緑の木々、そして広い歩道を見ていると美しい物語の中にいるような気分になるのです。

まるで、外を行き交う人々の日常をそっと覗き見しているみたいに。

木々のそよ風と外の世界を感じながら毎日を過ごしています。ランニング中に感じる近所の景色、ウェストミンスターの高層ビル群、ヴィクトリアのブックショップ、曲がりくねった川を眺めたり、お気に入りの美術館、テート・ブリテンを訪れたり。

この２月は今年予定されている仕事の準備のためとても静かに過ごしています。新しい展覧会を訪ね、近所で見つけたインスピレーションを写真に収め、カラーパレット、新しいアイディア、新しい作品にトライしながら。

いつものように、柔らかな色合いに惹かれています。テート・ブリテンでのターナー展には何度か足を運びとても刺激を受けました。彼の絵画の中には、光を通して背景と主題を融合させているものがあり、まるで夢のような感覚を生み出しています。そこに何があるのか、もう一度見たくなるのです。私はずっとこの感覚に惹かれてきました。私の絵も光と雰囲気、そしてエフォートレスな感覚に導かれるような、さりげない佇まいでありたいと思っています。この作品はこのアイディアに基づいて描いてみました。

霧がかった光の中、軒先に咲くポピーと大きな木々が立ち並ぶ通りを歩く女性の姿を思い浮かべました。彼女は綺麗な毛並みのワンちゃんとそこにいるのです。雨から身を守り、穏やかで自信に満ちた彼女は、春へと歩み出す準備ができています。静かな日曜日の散歩から始まる、新しい章のはじまり。

この作品のタイトルは「Sunday Breezy Walks」。

I have always been drawn to city environments, and to romanticising them.

While I moved to a new live/work place in Pimlico, London last year, it finally felt as though I'd landed where I was meant to belong.

My now flat is a Victorian building and has an almost Parisian feel to it (Paris has always been a city that I've been in love with and hugely inspired by) I was drawn to the flat because of its intricate mouldings, high sash windows and ceilings and a very small and humble area of space to create my work. Looking out of the windows whilst I'm painting each day, seeing the beautifully lined bright houses, huge sweeping green trees and wide pavements makes me feel like I'm in a beautiful story book.

Like a silent observer, peeking at each person's daily routine outside.

Taking in the breeze of the trees and life outside, each day. It has also inspired me to run and see the nearby sights, the towering buildings in Westminster, the bookshops in Victoria, the winding river and to visit my favourite museum Tate Britain.

Lately, this February - it's been a very quiet time in preparation for upcoming work events this year. So I've really taken advantage of seeking out new exhibitions, photographing ideas in my neighbourhood, playing and experimenting with colour palettes, new ideas and new pieces. I have been feeling excited about Spring and the new season ahead.

As usual, I am drawn to softer palettes - I felt very inspired by Turner's exhibition at Tate Britain which I re-visited a few times. In some of his paintings, he has a way of merging his environments and subjects from the light which feel dream-like. You have to look twice to see what's there. I have always been drawn to this idea - I prefer my paintings to be subtle - carried by light, atmosphere and an effortless and sense of movement.

I thought about toying with this idea and atmosphere for the painting below - I imagined a woman moving through the streets, lined with sweeping trees, and poppies on the gates, emerging from the misty light. She is present, completely at ease, with a furry companion - sheltered from smudges of rain, calm and confident, she is ready to step into Spring. A new chapter, beginning with a quiet Sunday walk.

The piece is called "Sunday Breezy Walks".

昨年ロンドンのピムリコに居住兼アトリエを構え、充実した日常を綴ったお手紙にはPoppyの表現したい世界がいっぱい詰まっていました。Poppyが描く夢のような世界は彼女の日常にリアルに存在し、そこにほんの少し想像力が重なることで、ありふれた景色が魔法をかけられたように輝き出します。世界をこんなふうに見ることができたら－そう思わせてくれるところが、彼女の作品の魅力のひとつなのかもしれません。
